Returning to work after children.
Returning to work after having children?
I remember it like it was yesterday. It was overwhelming and all consuming. I wanted to think of myself as this highly functional capable human with the ability to juggle a very busy full-time job and be an instagramable hero parent, but the reality of it was far from that. I was knackered, living off a few hours sleep each night and working overtime feeling like I needed to “prove” something. I put unnecessary pressure on my shoulders and it was harmful.
Returning to work after having children can feel overwhelming. Many parents experience a dip in confidence, wondering if they can balance it all and feel like their old selves again.
One of the reasons I have moved into career and confidence coaching is because of this feeling. I don’t want anyone to have that level of stress and anxiety, I want to provide simple tools and techniques which can allow you to take control of things whilst accepting, things will change!
In our sessions we can discuss in a safe and confidential environment, how you are feeling and practical strategies to get you back on track professionally. Some top tips include:
Acknowledge Your Strengths: Parenthood has equipped you with incredible skills—patience, multitasking, problem-solving, resilience… Recognise and celebrate these strengths and utilise these valuable assets in the workplace.
Set Realistic Goals: Ease back into your professional life by setting achievable goals. Break down tasks into manageable steps and celebrate small victories along the way.
Use KIT Days: A great opportunity to get a sense of the new now, so when you return to work, it’s not such a shock to the system.
Update Your Skills: The professional world evolves quickly. Take this opportunity to refresh your skills or learn new ones.
Seek Support: You’re not alone on this journey. Connect with fellow parents in the business, speak with your friends and family, or find a mentor. Sharing experiences and advice can be incredibly empowering. You’ll be amazed by how many parents felt the same!
Communicate: Talk to your employer/People team about your transition back to work. Discuss flexible working options if needed, and set clear expectations to create a supportive work environment. Phased returns are also recommended especially in roles which are incredibly demanding.
Practice Self-Care: Your well-being is crucial and your priorities will have changed. Make sure you allow time for self-care activities that rejuvenate you.
Plan ahead: One of my favourite sessions we work on is how to organise yourself so you feel ahead of the game. The juggle is real so planning ahead and keeping a system which keeps you on top of things will mean when it comes to the weekend, you get to send more time with your family.
Remember, you’re not just returning to work—you’re stepping into a new phase of your career with enhanced skills and a renewed sense of purpose. You won’t ever be your old self – this is about the new you and embracing the change and enjoying the journey.
